Whirks’ What
Whirks provides payroll processing, human capital management systems, and human resources support to small and mid-size companies. We serve as a business partner to empower your team and business to get one step better every day. We help you save time and money and let you focus on your passion.
Whirks is software plus service. We provide the technical tools to automate, digitize, and streamline your payroll process with real people on-call to provide guidance and support to ensure your employees are paid accurately and on time.
The most significant high-tech tool we provide is a human capital management platform, which is a weird industry term referring to an employee management process that encompasses the lifecycle of an employee from recruiting, onboarding, human resource compliance, self-service for employee paychecks and tax withholding and filings.
Human capital management systems have traditionally been run by people in multiple departments using piles of paper and manila file folders.
Whirks provides a digital human capital management system. Ironic, huh? We automate hiring processes, onboarding, employee training and development, and even offer a self-service kiosk where employees can access their pay stubs, clock in and out, and request time off.
Our ideal clients are small to mid-size owner-operated businesses with up to 500 employees.
Whirks’ Who, When, and Where
Whirks grew out of its sister company Patrick Accounting. Matthew Patrick founded Patrick Accouting in 2003, and realized early on that his clients needed payroll services.
In 2009 we created a division of Patrick Accounting called Patrick Payroll, and in 2019 we rebranded as Whirks. The name and focus of Whirks reflects that payroll is only a small part of hiring, managing, and engaging quality employees.
Both businesses operate from Memphis, Tennessee. Although based in the Bluff City, Whirks processes payroll for companies in 40 out of our 50 great states.
Matthew has worked as a Certified Public Accountant for 25 years. As a small business owner, he understands the specific pain points and challenges and likes helping his contemporaries’ businesses better.
To help guide the Whirks’ ship, Matthew hired Chief Operating Officer Mike Shaeffer in 2014. Where Matthew creates the big picture, Mike ensures we have the right colors and brushes to paint with.
Understanding how valuable human resources support is to small businesses, Whirks hired Greg Henderson to guide your business on the path to measurable, improved employee performance, government compliance, and positive employee experience.

Since 2019 Inc. Magazine has ranked Patrick Accounting (which includes Whirks) as one of the 5,000 Fastest-Growing Private Companies in America. Earning this prestigious ranking is no small feat. “To qualify, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by March 31, 2017. They must be U.S.-based, privately held, for-profit, and independent--not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies--as of December 31, 2020. The minimum revenue required for 2017 was $100,000; the minimum for 2020 was $2 million.
Inc. 5000 ranks companies by overall revenue growth during a three-year period. Patrick Accounting (including Whirks) percentage revenue grew by 95 percent from 2017 to 2020.
For three years running, the Memphis Business Journal has named Patrick Accounting as one of the small business honorees for Best Places to Work.
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) of the Mid-South gave Whirks an A+ rating and recognized us as a certified business. The BBB only accredits firms that adhere to its Standards of Trust, which are “a comprehensive set of best practices for how businesses should treat the public in a fair and honest manner.”
The BBB rating is based on information it is able to obtain about the business, and is significantly influenced by complaints received from the public. No one has complained about our business to the BBB.

Where did the name Whirks come from?
We created the name Whirks to tie our passion for human resources, employees, and small business together. The H (Human) and R (Resources) in wHiRks envelope the I (individual). Whirks aims to help small to mid-size, owner-operated businesses support their employees for hiring to retiring.
